Skills and Demographics

Durham City has a catchment area served by nearly 1 million people of which 65.4% are of working age. 16-19 year olds account for 8.1% of this, against 7.9% in the North East. Within 10 years this group will form the important 'late twenties' workforce. At 27% the work-related training participation rate of people within the catchment area is higher than the regional and national averages of 18.5% and 17.5%. Service and Public sectors are by far the biggest employment sectors in this catchment at 44.1% and 32.3%.
